Hello...
Sunday, April 17, 2005
A fellow mom-with-young-son friend, whom we've had weekly playdates for about
a year now, taught me how to knit. This was a little less than a month ago (March,
2005). I remember in that first week, she demonstrated the cast-on, the knit,
the purl, and then I went home and tried to cast on by myself. I couldn't do
it. I tried again. Still not right. No matter what videos I watched, no matter
how many times I tried, my cast-on was "off" until I finally threw
down my needles and threw myself on the bed in tears, crying "Why can't
I learn how to knit?!" A few days later, I picked up a book that my friend
lent me (in case I forgot her demonstrations), and took a close look at the
long-tail cast-on. I've been knitting ever since...
I realize that there are thousands of knitting blogs out there, most by whom have way more experience and expertise than I possess. Yet, at my friend's suggestion I thought I'd show some of the stuff I've done since I started a month ago...
What follows on this page are projects that I finished in 2005.

Finished projects for 2006
The pattern below is made with Lion Brand boucle yarn, from the free pattern on their website.
This was supposed to be a scarf (or something) made with that paton's fuzzy
stuff.
In the end it became a cool carpetfor my daughter's barbies.
This was a sweater pattern from the Aunt Bea collection, with Rowan all-season cotton yarn. A lot of fun to knit.
The x-back below was from an old issue of Easy Knitting. I didn't like the midriff on Faith, so I added the magenta "cummerbund" at the bottom. I used knitpicks twist and shine yarn, which worked out beautifully and was a lot less expensive.
Of course there's the obligatory toilet paper cozy...

Hi everyone. I finished another project today. This is that wonderful Joann's
exclusive Angel Hair yarn.
It was so much fun to work with, very soft, very good on bamboo needles. I wanted
to make a poncho
with it so I used one of the free Lion Brand patterns. Although I intended
to make it for myself, I ended
up giving it to Faith because I think it looks better on her. I pretty much
make everything for her these days!
Below was a simple "neck cozy" I made from a pattern found on the
label of one of those Lion Brand Landscape yarns.
It's not that I'm a huge fan of Lion Brand, but everytime I go to Joann fabrics,
I just can't resist buying something!
Right now I'm working on the "kyoto" sweater as found in the archives of knitty.com, as well as a fuzzy sweater based on the "To Dye For" pattern in Stich n' Bitch (for Faith), as well as a wool dress for her. I finished a baby blanket and I need to block it at some point. I might use some of that leftover Angel Hair yarn for something...hmmm I think a scarf is calling to me...maybe a blanket? We'll have to wait and see!

Okay...I finished this a little while ago...it's the "Big Bad Baby Blanket"
from Stitch n' Bitch. I made this for my sister-in-law's who's expecting her
fourth. The pattern called for this really expensive hand-wash yarn, which I
thought was impractical for a mom, so I knitted it in Baby Ul 100% merino wool
(machine washable) for half the price! I truly loved making this blanket.
These are some potholders I quickly knitted up for my Mom...using Lion Brand
Jiffy Thick and Quick. No pattern.
All in seed stitch. That worked out nicely.
Right now I'm working on a scarf of my own design for my Grandmother's Christmas
gift. After that, I'll be able to get
back to the projects I had ignored (Faith's sweater, Faith's dress, my sweater...geez
I even have yarn for a new sweater,
which I doubt I'll be able to start before spring. Ai yi yi!)
